Teaching style and philosophy:

The bedrock of my teaching philosophy and style is a positive, warm, trusting and kind relationship with the student. I show a real interest in each of my students as an individual and understand how different they can all be both in character, how they learn, and the level of support they require. My teaching style is built around Rosenshine's principles of instruction, including the 'I, We, You' method which helps students to learn most effectively. This means I will model a new concept, or technique, we will then practice this together (while I check they have understand exactly what they need to know), and then the student completes independent practice I have designed. I am a big fan of Doug Lemov's teaching strategies too, including 'Right is Right' (only accepting the actual answer, instead of something close to the correct answer being accepted as good enough and then improved by the teacher themselves). My tutoring sessions are interactive and engaging, and I like to keep my students busy thinking through probing questions, or using the online interactive whiteboard to get students to draw graphs, write answers to practice exam questions. I am not a proponent of talking at students for extended periods or overwhelming students with lots of information at once on a crowded powerpoint slide!

Additional information:

Prior to becoming a teacher I worked in Finance (Goldman Sachs) and in management consulting (PwC) which I use to make my Economics/Business teaching even more relevant to the world of work. As Head of Sixth Form I have lots of experience helping students prepare their UCAS applications and write personal statements. I am a keen sportsman, having played hockey for my university, and I regularly play tennis and golf. I also speak fluent French, and conversational Italian, Spanish and German.

I am based in Norwich and am willing to teach online
