Teaching and tutoring experience:

As well as delivering strong subject knowledge Mark is particularly keen on developing students' learning and revising techniques, such as how to write essays that tick all the boxes in the markscheme and to structure revision notes so that they map exactly how the student's brain will access information in an exam. To an extent anyone can impart content to students, so learning techniques are where Mark feels he delivers the most value added.

He has worked with students of a range of different abilities, teaching History and Maths at a school in New Zealand where all the pupils were from lower income backgrounds, and for Lanterna IB revision classes where for many students, English was not a first language, and for others there were huge gaps in their understanding of the syllabus. Mark is confident in tailoring learning to students of all different backgrounds and levels of confidence.

2020 Tutor, Pegasus Tutors

  • Homeschool History and Maths for a student working towards his Common Entrance exams at 13+ to Marlborough College.

  • Maths tuition for a student preparing for her ISEB pre-test to UK boarding schools.

  • History IGCSE tuition for a student at Godolphin and Latymer.

2013-2016 Teacher, Lanterna Education, 10 weeks total

  • Designed his own lesson plans, taught IB History, Maths (both Higher Level) and Environmental Systems to students aged 17-18 and responded to their feedback.

  • Took classes of up to 15 at a time through entire IB syllabuses in only 16 hours of teaching time.

  • Forced to prioritise and learn to deliver concepts clearly and quickly to students with exams a few weeks away.

  • Was offered a course director managerial position and invited to consider a full-time role at the company.

2012-present, Tutor, Lanterna Education & Private

  • Tutored c.15 pupils in History, Maths and ESS.

  • A wide variety of levels and modules, including A Level History, IB History, GCSE Maths, Key

    Stage 3 Maths and English, IB Environmental Systems and Societies.

  • Had to tailor programs to suit each individual student and manage expectations, often with

    short turnaround times.

2011-2012 Teacher & Sports Coach, Dilworth School, New Zealand, 1 year

  • Worked in a team of 14 other assistant teachers with children aged 8-12 on full bursaries from difficult backgrounds.

  • Taught Maths and History to Years 5 and 6.

  • Had to think constantly of innovative ways to motivate, teach and help children often

    resistant to authority.

Additional information:

For the last two years Mark has worked for a comedy production company called StraightUp Productions. Here he has managed a team of three and built business plans, budgets, marketing and project plans and kept the team to deadlines to deliver the financial success of each project. He has also had overall leadership on big projects, managing three shows across multiple venues at the Edinburgh Fringe and running comedy nights in a 200 seater venue.
