Teaching experience:
I have over twelve years' experience as a private tutor. I have taught a range
of ages from pre-GCSE to degree level, specialising in: English, Latin, Spanish, exam preparation for Common Entrance, UKiset, 7+, 8+, 11+, 13+, and the ISEB pre-test, entry into prestigious schools such as Eton, St Paul's, Westminster, Winchester, Dulwich, Alleyn's, and King's College Wimbledon as well as Oxbridge and Ivy League admissions.
A keen linguist and lover especially of Latin, I was permitted at Cambridge to take a paper in Latin language and literature as part of my English degree. I have since taught Latin to as high as undergraduate level.
Teaching style & philosophy:
I am very adept at tailoring my lessons to suit the needs and learning style of each student. My aim is always to instruct them – in as entertaining a manner as possible – towards critical and independent thought.
I first began tutoring in the sixth form as part of a voluntary school programme in which more academically-proficient students would provide extra-curricular support to other students struggling in a number of subjects. This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience which confirmed my suspicion that careful and attentive instruction can cultivate proficiency in anyone.
Additional information:
My pastimes include after-dinner speaking, and writing and performing comedy for the stage, film and radio. As a result, many of my pupils have professed to enjoy my use of comic, absurd or dramatic examples as a means of invigorating potentially dry topics.
If in person, I am looking to teach in London, where I am based. Teaching online is ideal insofar as it enables me to teach a lot more;though I am not opposed to teaching in person, and currently have some pupils for whom I provide a mixture of both.
