Teaching and tutoring experience
Over the last ten years I have worked as a tutor focussing on preparing students for the top private school entrance exams. I also work with a number of companies providing workshops for English students overseas (close reading, Shakespeare, story writing etc.)
11+ preparation
I have worked with girls and boys preparing for the 11+ and ISEB Pretest in Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning as well as interview preparation. I am experienced with a range of academic abilities, whether that is challenging very academically gifted children or working with less academic children to improve their confidence and instil good habits and skills that will help support their school work. I have prepared children for schools throughout London such as St Paul’s, Westminster, Latymer, Kings College, North London consortium schools, GDST schools..
7+ and 8+ preparation
The 7+ and 8+ exams pose a unique challenge as the children are so young and this is often their first experience of formal testing. I believe that maintaining confidence and enjoyment is key at this age to ensure that the process is not overwhelming. Schools I have prepared children for include; Latymer Prep, St Paul’s Junior, Bute House, KCS Wimbledon, Highgate, Westminster Under.
KS3 and GCSE Prep
I have helped children at secondary school with English Literature, both as general support and exam preparation. My degree in English Literature and experience working in theatre mean that I have a large breadth of knowledge and experience to draw from to make sure I find a unique way to help and engage each child.
Non exam preparation
Not all students are preparing for a specific exam and I have worked with many children and young people whose parents believe that they could benefit from extra one-to-one support outside the classroom. There are a large variety of circumstances in which I have worked with students, from challenging a gifted student who isn’t getting stretched in the classroom to supporting a student who has had their education disrupted. Each teaching experience is unique and the best thing about tuition is being able to tailor the lessons to suit each specific child.
Drama tuition
I am an experienced theatre director and drama facilitator and have worked with children and young people in groups and individually. I have directed children in professional productions as well as preparing children for LAMDA exams or other drama exams/performances. I also work with adults to prepare them for auditions or public speaking.
Teaching style and philosophy
I love the ability to change a lesson on my feet and react to the specific needs of the student, with 1:1 tuition you aren't tied to the curriculum or classroom management so you can go ahead or spend more time than planned if a student needs it. I also work in theatre and love finding ways to make academic subjects engaging and exciting all whilst preparing for exams and difficult challenges.
Additional information
I am based in SW London, happy to travel around London depending on the hours and the work. I am also a theatre director and drama facilitator so love making work engaging and accessible, particularly with creative writing. I do have experience with LAMDA exams as well as academic subjects.
