Teaching and tutoring experience

Hugh has been tutoring since 2009, and specialises in English and History. He teaches at all levels from Common Entrance to Oxbridge Entrance, including Winchester, Eton, and Westminster Scholarships, GCSE, AS, IB, A Level and Pre U.

Hugh has worked extensively in London and throughout the United Kingdom. In addition, he has completed several residential placements in Moscow, Switzerland, Bulgaria, and Abu Dhabi, as well as Skype support for other foreign students.

Hugh has always sought to share his enthusiasm for my subjects when teaching. One-on-one tuition affords the ideal environment in which to foster a genuine engagement with topics and ideas that can be rather less accessible in a classroom setting. Given the chance to ask as many questions as needed, to properly talk through a subject and to spend the necessary time consolidating their understanding of it, gives his students not only greater confidence with their studies, but often an enduring interest that surpasses the baseline requirements of their course. While the goal is of course to improve grades and exam results, Hugh is always to trying to encourage intellectual curiosity, and a general interest in learning as well. In addition, he takes the time to instil good working habits, and impart the well-tested techniques that make revising, critical reading, and exams far less intimidating.

Sample Students
- Olaoluwa, 13, Winchester Entrance. Ola needed several months of work to bring his English literature studies up to the required standard for Winchester Entrance. Hugh invigilated and marked numerous practice papers with him, provided a broad reading list to improve his overall literary fluency, conducted mock interviews, and gave general instruction in critical analysis and essay technique. All of This was rewarded, when he was accepted into Winchester.

- Zainab and Laila, 18, History A level. Hugh started teaching these sisters via Skype to prepare them for their Russian Revolution paper. The sessions were so productive that he was flown out to Abu Dhabi for a residential stint with the family, in the month before the exams for some intensive preparation. After exhaustive mock papers, notation, and group discussion sessions, both girls gained A grades.

- Josh,13, King's Scholarship, Eton. Josh was a very advanced pupil but needed some specific guidance as to how to approach the scholarship paper. Some rigorous work on essay technique gave him the necessary discipline in his writing, and he was awarded the full scholarship.

- Fatima, 18, History A level & Yale Scholarship. Fatima was another exceptional student. Hugh worked with her for 4 months prior to her A levels and successful scholarship to Yale, focusing mainly on writing style and critical analysis. Like many otherwise high-achieving students she suffered unduly from exam nerves, but by consolidating and developing her knowledge of the topic, and giving her specific techniques to employ when approaching timed questions, Hugh was able to help her quell her nerves and achieve the highest grades.

- Sam, 16, English & History GCSE. Sam had been expelled from his Public School for various infractions, and was falling badly behind in his work. Hugh saw him once a week over the course of an entire school year, and was able to help stabilise his academic progress. Having bonded over various shared sporting enthusiasms, Hugh managed to re-engage his interest for his subjects, and he surpassed his predicted grades in both.
